Stats highlights from the fifth and the final ODI between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Mount Maunganui

In the five home series prior to January 2014, they had won only one.12 Number of losses for Sri Lanka from 15 completed games in their last three away bilateral ODI series since November 2014. They played five ODIs against India in India, then seven in New Zealand last year (one washed out) and five in this series (one washed out).139.66 Martin Guptill’s strike rate in this series – he made 331 runs from 237 deliveries – the highest by any batsman aggregating 300 or more runs in a bilateral ODI series. He bettered AB de Villiers’ rate of 134.58 against India in the series last year. Overall, Guptill’s strike rate in this series stands at No. 5 on the list of highest strike rates in any ODI series; the top three in this list are from the 2015 World Cup.6 Number of times Matt Henry has taken four or more wickets in his 18 ODI innings, including his 5 for 40 in this match. This is the fewest innings any New Zealand bowler has taken to six such hauls. Before Henry, Mitchell McClenaghan had taken 19 ODI innings to complete six hauls of four or more wickets. Among other bowlers, only Ajantha Mendis (16 innings) and Mitchell Starc (17 innings) have taken fewer innings. Henry’s 41 wickets in 20 matches are the third highest any New Zealand bowler has taken in his first 20 ODIs after McCleneghan’s 48 wickets and Geoff Allott’s 42 wickets.3 New Zealand batsmen who have scored ten or more ODI centuries, including Guptill who scored his 10th ODI century in this match. Nathan Astle (16 centuries) and Ross Taylor (15) lead this list. Guptill is the quickest among the three to ten ODI centuries, in 121 innings. Taylor did it in his 125th innings whereas Astle took 132. Guptill also went past Scott Styris’ 4483 runs to become New Zealand’s eighth highest run-getter in ODIs.1996 The previous instance, before Henry’s 5 for 40, when a New Zealand bowler took a five-for in ODIs against Sri Lanka. Danny Morrison had taken 5 for 34 in Sharjah. Henry’s five-wicket haul in this match is only the third by a New Zealand bowler against Sri Lanka. Richard Hadlee is the only other bowler to do so, with his 5 for 25 in the 1983 World Cup.13 Wickets by Henry in this series, in three innings. He took 4 for 49 and 4 for 33 in the first two ODIs in Christchurch and 5 for 40 in this match. His 13 wickets are the joint highest in a series where a bowler has bowled in three or fewer innings. Ryan Harris and Mustafizur Rahman have also taken as many wickets in a series.331 Runs by Guptill in this series – the second-highest by a New Zealand opener in a bilateral ODI series after Nathan Astle’s 351 runs against Zimbabwe in 1997-98. Guptill had scored 330 runs in the three-match ODI series in England in 2013. Overall, it is the seventh-highest by a New Zealand batsman in a two-team series. Against Sri Lanka, it is the fourth-highest series aggregate and the second-highest in a five-match series.19 Sixes hit by Guptill in this series including three in this match – the third-highest by a batsman in a bilateral series. Rohit Sharma hit 23 sixes in six innings against Australia in 2013-14. Shane Watson hit 20 sixes in only three matches against Bangladesh in 2011 (15 of those in a single innings) and de Villiers hit 20 in five matches against India in India last year. No other batsman has hit even 10 sixes against Sri Lanka in a bilateral series.4 Century partnerships between Guptill and Kane Williamson in ODIs, including their 122-run stand in this match. All four partnerships have been worth 120 or more runs and have come for the second wicket. The 153-run partnership against India in Auckland in 2014 remains the highest between them. Guptill and Williamson are the second New Zealand pair after Andrew Jones and John Wright (5 partnerships) to string together four or more century stands for the second wicket.12 Totals of 270 or more by New Zealand when batting first in the last 13 complete ODIs. The only time they failed to cross 270 was in the World Cup final against Australia where they were all out for 183. This sequence includes eight totals of 300-plus.21 Innings by Nuwan Kulasekara without a three-for in ODIs against top teams, before his 3 for 53 in this match. The last time he took three wickets in an ODI against a Test team was against England in Chester-le-Street in 2014. In 21 innings between his two three-fors against Full-Member teams, he had taken 12 wickets and had also gone wicket-less in 11 innings.140 Innings by Angelo Mathews to complete 4000 runs in ODIs; he got to the milestone in this match. He became the tenth batsman from Sri Lanka to get to this milestone and is the fourth quickest among them. Upul Tharanga (119 innings), Marvan Atapattu (123) and Kumar Sangakkara (136) took fewer innings to achieve the feat.1 Sri Lanka captain who scored more runs in an ODI innings in New Zealand than Mathews’ 95: Sanath Jayasuriya’s 103 in Auckland in 2001. Mathews’ 95 is also the highest by a visiting captain against New Zealand since Dwayne Bravo’s 106 in Hamilton in 2013-14. This was Mathews’ second dismissal in the 90s in ODIs. The first one was against Pakistan in Hambantota in 2014.
