Tottenham Hotspur have placed Everton midfielder Ross Barkley as a top priority for this summer’s transfer plans, according to The Mirror.
What’s the story?
Barkley’s long-term future at Goodison Park has been a talking point over the past few weeks.
Manager Ronald Koeman made it clear to the media last week that the club want to offer Barkley a new deal.
However, the Dutchman suggested that his midfielder may be considering his options as he has a desire to play Champions League football.
The Mirror claims that Spurs are eager to bring in Barkley, who could potentially be part of a swap deal involving Moussa Sissoko.
The publication adds that if a transfer were to go through, Everton would want upwards of £30m.
Should Barkley consider Spurs?
Given that Everton is his boyhood club and has worked his way up the ranks, it would be difficult to walk away from the Merseyside outfit.
However, if the midfielder has desires to compete among Europe’s elite, he will have more chance of doing that at Tottenham.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side qualified for the Champions League last season and grabbed a Europa League spot in the campaign prior.
The Argentine is developing a young side capable of challenging for top honours, and even though Everton are on the right path, they are still a way off yet.
Barkley would also have to take into consideration his experience under Koeman.
In the early stages of this season, the 23-year-old struggled to hold down a first-team spot, but since December has been prevalent.
Barkley is well liked by the Everton fans, but he does tend to become the scapegoat when things are not going to plan, which is a big burden to bare.
