Rangers should make a move for Southampton’s Steven Davis, as the Northern Irishman is struggling for game time at the moment under Mark Hughes.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the 33-year-old actually used to play for the Scottish giants back in the day, before leaving for the Premier League in 2012 after the club were plunged into financial trouble. Davis has since made over 200 appearances for the Saints and has been a key man throughout the club’s time back in the top-flight.
However, the 105-cap international has struggled for gametime, making just one start for the club in the Carabao Cup. Davis is a vastly experienced midfielder who may see a return to his former club as a nice way to end his playing days before he retires.
He has lost his place in the side to the consistent midfield duo of Mario Lemina and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and there seems no place for his talents at St Mary’s anymore.
Where would he fit in at Rangers?
Steven Gerrard currently prefers to adopt a 4-1-4-1 formation with Ryan Jack in the holding position, whilst Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria are deployed ahead of him in central attacking midfield areas.
Davis’ versatility and experience allows him to be a capable performer in either of those areas. Additionally, with all due respect to the Scottish Premiership, it is a less demanding division than the Premier League and would ensure that the Irishman can perform week in, week out without picking up injuries or becoming fatigued.

He would bring guile, composure and a few goals to a side who are currently competing in three competitions and need all the depth they can get in what is a physically demanding fixture calendar.
Due to him being out of favour at the struggling Premier League side, he most likely wouldn’t cost too much and would be an invaluable asset on the training field as well for a Rangers side filled with young players.
