Speaking to Sky Sports, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has admitted another trophyless campaign would be considered “unsuccessful” on a personal level.
What did he say?
The north London side have yet to win a piece of silverware under the Argentine and were beaten by rivals Liverpool in the Champions League final last season.
Now, Pochettino has revealed that not ending the club’s wait for a trophy this year would represent something of a personal failure.

He said: “Of course it was always my priority (to win trophies), but it was a big priority to help the club. It doesn’t change that always my priority to win, to win games and trophies. I think a few days ago someone asked me what my aim was for this season. My personal objective is to win a trophy, but that doesn’t mean that winning a trophy is compulsory, or that it will be an unsuccessful season if we do not win a trophy.
“But personally, if at the end we do not win a trophy, for myself that is going to be an unsuccessful season, but that does not mean that it will be unsuccessful for the club. That is for myself, not the collective.”
Time to end the hoodoo
For all the incredible work Pochettino has done in his time in north London, the failure to lift a trophy remains a blot on his copybook. Jurgen Klopp silenced the doubters last season by leading Liverpool to the holy grail of the Champions League, and it is surely now time for the Spurs boss to do the same.
The Lilywhites have seen Premier League title challenges fall by the wayside in the closing stages of campaigns in recent years, and will hope their summer recruitment can take them that one step closer, bringing in the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele and Ryan Sessegnon.
Top-four finishes are all well and good, but a trophy would be the cherry on top for Pochettino’s remarkable work.
