Despite the success Everton boss David Moyes has brought to Goodison Park in recent years, it would seem the Glaswegian still fears for his job on a day to day basis. Moyes explains that fear never goes away, It is why after nearly nine years at Goodison Park, he still likens his own “management style to a jockey, whip in hand, cajoling his team over the finishing line to save them – and him – from the knacker’s yard. I’m still trying to survive. Your job as a football manager is never secure,” he said.
The Everton manager’s concern may come as quite a surprise considering during his 9 year tenure at Goodison, he has turned the club into a team that is regularly challenging for a place in either one of Europe’s premier competitions, most notably twice finishing in the top four. It would certainly seem Moyes’ anxiousness is somewhat unnecessary.
“Even the bookies consider Moyes bulletproof but listening to the Glaswegian yesterday, you get the feeling he takes nothing for granted, particularly after an indifferent start to the season.” This kind of mentality should serve the Everton boss well; we all know that the world of football can change in an instant. As, Moyes says “I don’t think you ever feel your feet are under the table as a football manager, and I don’t just now.”
Moyes’ cautious approach may contribute to his fears, but with his track record at Everton unless there are serious significant changes for the worst, I believe the Scot has little to worry about. He express’ “You have to come in and work every day because your job is never secure in football management, and I’d never treat it like that. If I didn’t work hard every week, I’d be jeopardising myself.” This is an admirable attitude towards work, and if he continues in this manner, then he has little to worry about as I’m sure positive results will follow.
